In my previous post, I discussed some of the requirements and skills that someone needs to have in order to become a freelance writer. However, I don’t want that to discourage anyone from achieving their goal of a career in freelance writing. There are plenty of reasons to get a job in freelance writing. The biggest benefit of becoming a freelance writer is because it allows you to run your own business and make money working from home. There are no bosses, no commutes, and no dress code. You can work from your own living room while your kids run around or while caring for an elderly parent. You can even fill empty time at another job by doing writing assignments. The ability to telecommute and work from home is what drives most freelance writers.
The second reason to become a freelance writer is the ability to set your own salary. While I won’t lie and say that you can become a millionaire from your writing, the amount you can earn from freelance writing is generally limited by the hours you’re willing to work. If you continue to apply for freelance writing jobs and improve your writing skills, you’ll continue to earn more money. The reverse of this is also true, which is another factor in favor of freelance writing careers. If you only want to work a few hours a week and use freelance writing as a part-time job and side income, you can do so by taking on fewer clients.
Another benefit of going into freelance writing as a career is because it allows you to use your writing skills in a purposeful way. Depending on the kind of writing you do, you could be making a difference through your writing as well. You might be helping to teach by writing educational materials, or helping to inform the world about an issue that matters to you through blogging. Even if you’re writing advertising materials, you’re helping that company to succeed. Freelance writing gives you a sense of purpose not obtained through many regular day jobs.
The final reason to become a freelance writer is because freelance writers are in demand. In a time when advertising budgets are shrinking and companies are reducing their workforces, most businesses cannot afford to keep writers on staff. Freelance writers fill this role by providing quality copy for brochedures, advertising purposes, or whatever the business’ needs may be, but for a lower cost than hiring a full-time employee.
So, as you can see, there are many benefits to choosing freelance writing as a career path. Taking on a freelance writing job is a fantastic way to earn money from home, set your own salary and work hours, and make use of your writing skills to make a difference. Since freelance writers are in high demand while traditional jobs are not, there has never been a better time to take on a freelance writing job and start making money from home.
